No Caste Census Other Than Scheduled Castes, Tribes: Government

The authorities has determined as a matter of coverage to not enumerate caste-wise inhabitants aside from SCs and STs in census, Lok Sabha was knowledgeable on Tuesday.

Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai additionally mentioned that in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution, the seats are reserved for SCs and STs in Lok Sabha and within the assemblies in proportion, as practically as could also be, to their inhabitants.

Mr Rai mentioned in census, the castes and tribes that are particularly notified as Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes as per the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order 1950 and the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950 (as amended occasionally) are enumerated.

“The state governments of Maharashtra and Odisha have requested to collect caste details in the forthcoming census. The government of India has decided as a matter of policy not to enumerate caste-wise population other than SCs and STs in census,” he mentioned replying to a written query.

Replying to a different query, Mr Rai mentioned the intent of the federal government for conducting census 2021 has been notified within the Gazette of India on March 28, 2019 however as a result of outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the census actions have been postponed.
